Transport

Melbourne has an extensive public transport system, with buses, trains and trams that’ll take you pretty much anywhere. The cost is approximately $8 per day. But in the CBD, trams are free. So for two of you, that is quite a saving. Conversely, if you stay in a suburb like St Kilda, your visits to the city will cost you.  Limited public transport runs all night on Friday and Saturday nights.

Taxis and Uber are plentiful, and affordable for short journeys if there are a few of you.

Most people on a trip to Australia will visit more than one capital city, and most visiting Melbourne will fly in from Sydney. Train and bus are also options. Here are some typical costs for those we book in advance:

From Sydney:

Flights $120 – 85 minutes (plus time and costs getting to/from airports)
Train $66 – 11 hours
Bus $60 – 12 hours(not recommended, the train is quicker and more comfortable)

For a one week visit, the average transport cost will be around $100, or $14 per day.
